Just How Dangerous is Chicken Flu?
Defined Tag: Chicken Flu. We've all seen the news, heard the reports. Dozens of people in Asia are getting sick, some are even dying. Chicken owners are having their poultry killed off by the hundreds. And through it all, there remains the underlying fear that chicken flu, also known as bird flu or avian flu, will spread to America and cause an epidemic on par with the destruction smallpox wreaked in South America a few centuries ago, when entire civilizations were killed off from it. The truth of the matter is, while chicken flu is a very real danger, it isn't likely to affect America in that way at this time. For starters, very few people in America actually come into contact with live chickens. Assuming this flu did cross the ocean, and did manage to affect chickens here, very few people would actually come into contact with sick birds. And in its present stage, this flu can spread from birds to other birds and from birds to people, but not from people to other people. Even people who catch chicken flu from birds aren't likely to spread it to other people. It's worth mentioning that chicken flu is *not* like Mad Cow disease. You get it from breathing the air that they breath, touching their saliva or droppings, or, possibly, by eating raw or undercooked chicken or handling raw chicken without washing your hands immediately afterwards. If you already follow all the instructions for safe handling of meat of any kind-wash your hands before and after touching it, cook thoroughly, defrost in the refrigerator and not on the counter--then you will not catch chicken flu from eating chickens. If you are one of the rare people in America who comes into frequent contact with chickens, keeping the coops and cages clean and washing hands and changing clothes and shoes after working with the chickens will not only help keep you safe, it will also keep your chickens healthy. At this point in time, chicken flu is not a serious issue for people in America.
